Applicants must be in possession of:

Refer to the list of country-specific qualifications

  1. a degree in Education with at least Second Class (Honours) from the University of Malta or a degree from another university recognised as equivalent for the purpose together with a minimum of one year's teaching experience or
  2. any other degree with at least Second Class (Honours) together with a recognised teaching or education qualification and a minimum of one year's teaching experience or
  3. a degree in Education or a Teacher's Certificate together with at least two years' teaching experience and other suitable qualifications obtained following the degree or after the Teacher's Certificate or
  4. any first cycle degree with either a recognised teaching qualification or a Diploma in Education together with two years' experience in an education setting or
  5. a permanent teaching warrant together with a minimum of three years’ teaching experience.

Applicants admitted under (c) or (d) shall be required to attend an interview during which they shall be requested to provide evidence of prior experiential learning and to demonstrate that they are capable of completing the Course and may be required to complete a preparatory programme.

The Faculty of Education has been offering the Master of Education (M.Ed) course for a significant number of years. Since its inception, the principle behind the design of the M.Ed. course was to provide the Maltese teaching community with qualified teachers who are researchers. This Masters degree is meant to encourage you as a qualified teacher to deepen your knowledge in an area of specialization within the field of education. The Master of Education programme of study is administered by the M.Ed. Board of Studies appointed by the Faculty Board of the Faculty of Education. The Board of Studies is responsible for all M.Ed. degrees awarded by the Faculty.

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of Master of Education - M.Ed. - under the auspices of the Faculty of Education.

By the end of the course, according to the area of research chosen, you will be able to:

  • Conduct a thorough review of literature;
  • Analyse and critically evaluate relevant literature ;
  • Formulate pertinent research questions and design an appropriate research methodology to address these questions;
  • Compose and present academic papers suitable for publication in peer-reviewed journals and conference settings;
  • Produce a comprehensive research report that discusses and describes the research exercise conducted; and,
  • Propose recommendations based on significant research findings.
